Shortage of IT talent

Attrition and Shortage of IT talent is something that I am concerned about right now. We have seen four times more people leave in last month, than our average. This may be also because the size has grown, and the ratio to total number of developers would come to the same. But it yet makes an impact, and one that concerns me!

That’s because I am seeing some patterns. Everytime we took a major step in the expansion / growth of the company, we have faced higher attrition in the next three months. And we have also seen a chain reaction – when one leaves, a few others leave soon after. Having a strong community feeling in the workspace has this side effect! As I learnt reading Gopal’s observations about programmers and their jobs.

Hiring superstar programmers has been a problem for OSDN too. So no wonder it’s a problem for us! And then there is a huge shortage of IT workers – even for India! Nasscom says “The country will need 350,000 engineers a year, but no more than 150,000 of the most highly skilled engineers will be available each year.”

That’s both a threat and an opportunity.

And I am still wondering if this is something that has no end! As of now, that’s how it seems!

  1. Well my experience is we have much less frequency of people leaving jobs in Magnet. Anyway while hiring people we gave less consideration to the location from where the candidate is traveling from. A fresher spending 4 to 5 hours daily in traveling may only attend till he learns the things.
During the interviews for systems I gave least preference to such candidates.
I understand that this may not be true all the time, but most of the time.
