Pankajbhai of Bookland gifted me The Daily Drucker on my wedding. The subtitle of the book is “366 Days of Insight and Motivation for Getting the Right Things Done”, and it’s got Drucker’s thoughts for each day in the year.
The piece on 20th February says that there are no underdeveloped countries in the world, only undermanaged ones. Drucker than goes on to explain that it’s not the economic wealth of the country that gives development. It’s the quality of management that determines the quality of development of the country. So India is still a developing country because of its management, not because of the population!
I was thinking about it, and felt that the development of a company or a person is also the function of its management. If your organization is developed in a particular discipline, it’s because you managed it well. If it is underdeveloped in some discipline / function, it means you have undermanaged it! I felt a great sense of responsibility as well as power when this sunk into me. Anything that I want to manage, I should manage that well. Anything I don’t manage, will not develop.
This sounds very simple, but is such a profound idea! When it comes from Drucker, it’s got to be brilliant though!
And here are Top 20 quotes from the book on Be Excellent blog.
