Goowy – Groovy desktop Web2.0 style

Looks like the web desktop market is crowding already! These Web 2.0 applications allow you to manage your email, contacts, RSS feeds, podcasts, searches, and then they do some more.

There was a post on TechCrunch that led me to Goowy.

Goowy - Web 2.0 desktop

Goowy is groovy! They have already implemented email, calendar, contacts, some games, and a good collection of widgets for RSS feeds, podcasts and search. The interface is snappy. It’s quite a Rich Internet Application. Comes with 2GB disk space, and is free!

I think it’s a good mix of Flash and AJAX. I wonder how they implemented file upload in email. That page looked like an HTML page, but the next was a Flash one. Will have to do some digging around!

Everybody seems to be getting on the web desktop bandwagon though. I have seen so many of such applications recently. I would still like to keep my data on my computer, so wouldn’t use a web based desktop. I am okay with publishing pictures or pushing files up on a server when I want to share them. But I would prefer taking my data along with me. It’s still some time when bandwidth and connectivity will be commodity. And yeah, they better work out some offline storage model too for any web desktop they build 😉

  1. Hi Nirav, bumped into your blog through a freinds link on Live Journal. I head the IT function for a fairly decent entertainment firm and we were looking around for some expertise which you guys seem to be having. Mostly around RIA app which we need to talk to our data. Was wondering if we could chat up? Drop a line and I will call you back. Loved some of the stuff you guys have come up with. Cheers!

Nirav’s note: BTW, this is a nice review of the webmail part of Goowy. It’s in German, so you may want to use Babelfish to translate.
