Crossword Bookstores organized a book signing by Robin Sharma last Saturday at Kemps Corner, Mumbai. I attended the event and it was a wonderful experience.
Robin Sharma shared about his life, the journey so far and some of his wisdom. He said every dream begins small. If somebody does not laugh at your dream, your dream is not big enough. Failure is the price for ambition. So dream big, start small and keep on making one percent improvements every day. You will be surprised how things turn out.
People spend first half of their life to accumulate wealth. In the other half they spend all the wealth they have accumulated on health. He said health is wealth. Make sure that you are exercising regularly. Exercise will always get you back to a happy mood.
Robin says I turned 41 recently and I have been reading a lot of obituaries these days. I am yet to find an obituary that says “He died peacefully, surrounded by his bankers, chartered accountants and stock brokers!” People die surrounded by their family and friends. We neglect these relationships so much that only at the end of life we regret it. On the deathbed, we regret what we could not do, not what we did. So don’t stop, follow your dreams.
Robin does not like himself to be called a Guru! When you call somebody a Guru, you are separating him from other people. I am an ordinary human being; I have had my share of setbacks and success. I don’t want to be a Guru!
And he has a genuine, magical smile. I experienced the serenity, love and joy in his smile. I feel this was one of the best “take home” for me. He is also radiant. His shaved head shines and gives him a halo effect!
The lady, who was sitting next to me, had just heard about “The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari” and Robin Sharma. She asked me how this book was different from other self help books. She was in her sixties and had read a lot. I said there is hardly any new wisdom in Robin’s books. It’s just the way he puts things together that is so marvelous. He packs age old wisdom in a nice story and practical steps that anybody could carry out. When you read the book, you see your life in it, and when you are connected at this level, it’s a surprise if it does not transform your life.
Just one example of how Robin connects his audience with himself. When he started, he actually asked the 150 odd people to stand up. He thanked all of us for being there and asked us to give a standing ovation to ourselves and the people around for being the special human being that we are. Next, he asked that we look at the person standing next to us and tell her how amazing she is. And then sit down.
Robin personally signed all the books for all the fans. He even talked to people and shook hands. I told him his books changed my life. He said he was honored to hear that. I said I hope he can continue doing this work of transformation for many more. He said, you keep reading, I will keep writing!

🙂 I haven’t read “The Return of the Rishi” of Deepak Chopra. Actually, I have not read any of Deepak Chopra books. I somehow don’t like to read books that have the author in suit on the cover!
