Reliance NetConnect on a Mac

Lot of posts related to Mac lately! Today, I wanted to get online from home and thought of hooking up my Reliance phone via the data cable. The rconnect software works well on Windows and Linux, but I was not sure about Mac. So I plugged one end of the cable into the phone and the other on the USB port of the Mac. Went to System Preferences -> Network and it told me that the system has detected the LG CDMA USB Modem and I should configure it!

I tried it out, but the default modem driver did not work. So I took my pick and selected an “au CDMA” driver. And to my surprise, it worked!

The dial up settings are simple:

  • The number to dial is #777
  • Username and password are your mobile phone number

Good to be connected this way. Though the speed is not high, it’s workable. The main advantage is I can take it almost anywhere in the country and still be connected!

  1. Man thanks a lot, I have a tata indicom connection. The default modem drivers (I guess it was apple v.92) did not work. Just hope that the au CDMA one does.

  2. Hi, the au modem script did work and it was able to connect to my phone and try to connect. But then the phone shows “ASYNC DATA” and OS X say “No carrier found”…. any idea what’s happening?

  3. Hey, anyways I did get my issues sorted. Had to use a Modem Script generator for it. But your blog still gave me an idea of how things work, plus hope that I can still configure a mac.

  4. I had booked a Reliance Net connect connection as I got a free offer with my HCL laptop.

The offer was for Rs.3750 for three months internet usage free with a download limit of 1

    GB.

The strange thing was the next month I got a bill for Rs. 382 which was followed by

    another bill of Rs. 2464.

Apparently the FREE OFFER WITH HCL AND HP AND OTHER OFFERS IS NOT FREE FOR THREE MONTHS.

THEY SEND YOU BILLS THE NEXT MONTH.When I escalated it to Reliance they said they would

look into it and have since never gotten back. According to my bill there is a fine print

that says its 1 GB download or 20 hours of internet surfing time (which is not specified

anywhere). That means if you cross the 20 hours you pay @ Rs0.50 per minute.

I urge anyone who has THE HP OR HCL OR COMPAQ LAPTOP TO NOT BUY THE DATACARD FREE OFFER

ITS JUST RELIANCE’S WAY OF CHEATING PEOPLE.

IF YOU ARE SO KEEN ON A DATACARD YOU MAY HAVE MINE (FREE OF COST IF U CAN HELP ME TAKE

THESE PEOPLE TO TASK FOR CHEATING CUSTOMERS. ITS WORTHLESS NOW GIVEN THE PILED UP BILLS)

  5. Hi Raju,

Just plugin the phone using a USB cable to the MacBook. Go to your System Preferences – Network. It should detect the phone. You can then select the CDMA driver and get going.

  6. Hi Nirav,

    Thanks for quick reply.

I tried but I didn’t see CDMA driver in Network settings window. Could you tell me how do I came know whether it is recognized the phone or not. where it will list CDMA driver to select it.

My Mac OS X version is 10.4.8.

  7. Hi! Guys. Can any body give some specific information how to start the CDMA Modem (Tata indicom-LG phone)with iBook (OS 10.4.9). Which au CDMA modem selection is working, or any other work around.

    Help is appreciated

  8. First things first: When you connect your phone and go to the Network option in System Preferences, the OS must detect and ask you to configure it. Until you get it, it won’t work.

Once you get it, you can configure it to use the modem (au CDMA 1x WIN W01K works for my LG 6230).

Do a little trial and error to see what works.

    HTH.

  9. Anyone using an Tata Indicom data card with the most recent Macbooks? I am thinking of getting a Macbook, but the only hurdle so far has been that it doesnt have a PCMCIA slot. So fine – I can get a PCMCIA to USB adapter that will let me plug in the card via a USB port.

Not being a Mac user so far, I am curious as to whether the driver described above is going to work in this case. Not being able to use a data card is a deal-killer for me as fas as Macs go, unfortunately.

PS: Great post, Nirav. I was beginning to think I was the only Mac user with this problem in India…

  11. Hi,Need help with the Tata Indicom CDMA USB Modem for Mac.Cant get any drivers for Sungil Telecom SXC-1080 Please Help

  12. Based on the above blogs, i purchased a Reliance Data Connection i.e, HAUWEII EC 325 and connected my macbook to it after loading the Hauweii drivers. Unfortunately, it’s not working even though i followed the exact steps mentioned.

The system is detecting the modem port, but when trying to connect it says a modem error, please check your settings and try again…

Any help from anyone would be helpful…

  13. For some reason when I connected the data card, it was showing 2 HAUWEII cards available, i had to delete both install again, and then despite showing both again, deleting one HAUWEII cleared the problem and it connected fine.

I also tried the Launch2Net and it didn’t work.

  17. This mail is for Kunal who has mentioned in his mail that he has been cheated by Reliance wherein he recieved a free data card along with HCL notebook…..

Dear Kunal I think u need to file a complaint against Reliance in Consumer court….Please check this link given below and u’ll get to know all info about filling a complaint…

    Best regards,
    Sanjay

  18. Thanks Kunal.

I too got a HCL computer and now got myself registered with it for a reliance data card. But it seems as reliance is upto it’s old game of sucking the people whom it bills ( and leaving scores of others without bills – there were scores of such phones in chennai which has not received a single bill for the last three years ! )

    F… the Reliance datacard !

  20. Hello,

I bought a New HCL Laptop couple of Days ago and i was very much excited about the Reliance free data card that i was going to get tomorrow paying them 3750. I am lucky i read this forum and i will never go for this as one of our friend said the maximum time is 1 GB or 20 hours, which ever is earlier.

Can you suggest me best data card or service i should opt for my new laptop. I never used a wireless internet as this is my first laptop… Any help is appreciated… Also, can i use this laptop continously for like 16 hours a day?

    Thank you,
    Mohit

  21. Hi,

I need a PCMCIA slot ( IInd Hand ) of Tata Indicom. I have a USB port of Tata Indicom ( Which Sucks ).
A little Jerk and the Connection goes dead.
I hear PCMCIA slots have no such problem.

Can anyone help me out in this regard ?

    Regards

    Aman

  22. Mohit: I don’t have comments on the data card from Reliance. I happily use my LG phone to connect the net.

And as for using the laptop for 16 hours a day, well, I don’t see a problem to the laptop. The batteries will wear out a tad faster though. And if you are going to work for 16 hours in front of the computer, you will wear out a tad faster as well πŸ˜‰

huawei 325 modem is wat i’m using

    pls pslsssssssssss

  25. hi..

there seems to be a problem with using the huawei EC 325 (reliance net connect) on the older macs.

My intel mac worked just fine.. all I had to do was install the drivers of the net and it worked like a charm.

but when I tried it with my older ibook g4.. there seems to be a conflict with the internal modem… It gives me the option of choosing te driver, but it still figures that its an internal modem. in my show list, it never apeares as any thing ohter than an internal modem.. and there fore gives me a modem error, when I try to dial.

    any clue ?? any one?

    Ramse~

  26. hi guys,
I Still think right now Reliance is the best USB internet device to buy, as there is no other company that offers internet on OSX.Also as the new macbook and pros dont have pcmicia slots USB is the only way to go…
I just got the USB reliance one and its pretty good, if your a traveller and got all over the country its perfect, mine worked in MUNNAR also. Its juts amazing that, Though the trafiff deals arent that great, but what the hell as long as you can surf the net and makes loads of more bucks via being n touch with work via reliance….
I have the older Tata Indicom Zte card as i had got it for my compaq, i here there are pcimca slot to USB avaible online, anywhere here in india??? also is anyone interested in buying it off me pls let me know via email…

  27. I called Reliance and they say they have no drivers for the Mac. I called Apples people here RSG (mumbai) and they said Reliance GIVES drivers for the Mac with the USB data connect.

I wrote to Huawei (who makes the card) and they say they dont work on Mac.

YET, I have seen a demo where a Macbook was being used with one.

I called Reliance again and the tech guy proposes to lecture me on how a Macbook is Dual bootable and did I know that the mac can now run “Windows too ?!” UH – HUH !@ Been using macs for 11 years – what a wonderful bit of news , be-still my beating heart !!!
Then Reliance goes one step further – starts asking me if I am running APPLE on an HP laptop and that perhaps then through windows it might work on APPLE running on HP laptop .

    H O L Y S M O K E S man; where do they get these guys from !!!!!

  28. Just to let you know, RUSS Barkmans scripts make just about any phone work on the mac

i used a tata indicom connection on the mac very succesfully and I think Reliance is a CHOR company

  31. Could sure use some help. I’m trying to get my in-laws setup with an iBook and Tata Indicom LG LSP-340E phone.

Have cable, phone, etc., but cannot get the phone recognized by the OS when entering “Network” as suggested above.

“System Profiler” is recognising the USB cord.

Is there anything I need to do to the phone to set it up to act as a modem?

Any suggestions or help greatly appreciated!

    Tom

  32. Hey everyone. I was surprised at finding so many Mac users in here.

I have successfully used Tata Indicom Talky to my Mac Book Pro. I am presently using my Nokia GSM phone to access the internet here using Hutch’s Access scheme. Anyone has any queries about connecting to the internet then you can feel free to visit my blog πŸ˜€ and ask.

@ Tom: You need to create a modem script for the phone, using a Modem Script Generator and adding a command. Don’t remember the exact link or the exact link. Check out tech-tree india forums.

Anyone here game for setting up an Indian Apple community blog?

  36. Nirav I did visit that blog. The thing is that it does not focus on Indian needs. It may have some links about an apple reseller here or there, but that hardly counts. Things like internet drivers are indeed a real pain in India and no one discusses things like connecting a phone on the laptop (exceptions ofcourse πŸ™‚ exist)

I do know of some Mac wielding friends who like the idea of a community blog. I am all for it.

Am willing to set up one if you agree. What blogging platform? I would say Blogger simply because of the number of people who use that service even though my personal blog is on wordpress (Though it is a different story how I like wordpress.org much more than wordpress.com,,)

The only concern I have is that people are almost always busy, me included. So it may not have a lot of posts; but they say something is better than nothing and who am I to disagree?
