Reliance NetConnect on a Mac

Lot of posts related to Mac lately! Today, I wanted to get online from home and thought of hooking up my Reliance phone via the data cable. The rconnect software works well on Windows and Linux, but I was not sure about Mac. So I plugged one end of the cable into the phone and the other on the USB port of the Mac. Went to System Preferences -> Network and it told me that the system has detected the LG CDMA USB Modem and I should configure it!

I tried it out, but the default modem driver did not work. So I took my pick and selected an “au CDMA” driver. And to my surprise, it worked!

The dial up settings are simple:

  • The number to dial is #777
  • Username and password are your mobile phone number

Good to be connected this way. Though the speed is not high, it’s workable. The main advantage is I can take it almost anywhere in the country and still be connected!

  1. Yes Cedric

Just found this site too – came here to post the links but you have done it already. Kudos.

Actually the Mac suppliers in Bombay are demanding Rs 2000 or so to come and “load” drivers that make the Huawei card work and lo and behold I found the site above and it works like a charm.

Now, getting a bit more adventurous I wanted to know if anyone has succesfully had a Tata Indicom OR Reliance Mobile phone from the recent series work with the data cable on a Mac laptop ?

Reason I ask is that if so, then getting the phone and cable for me is better than just the card as I get to use an alternative cel too – not just a data card.

    Cheers

pl post reply here in this blog so that everyone gets the benefit of the knowledge – thats why I am not revealing my personal email address.

  2. I am not sure if my phone is the recent series, it’s LG RD 6230. And I use it with a data cable on Mac all the time. This post was originally written to connect using that phone.

Reliance has launched a lot of lower cost models recently, and I don’t know if they can be used from the Mac. So if someone’s found that, would be great to learn!

Thanks for all the comments everyone! It certainly contributes to a lot of users. This post is one of the most popular on this site 🙂

  3. Hi guys,

I have an Apple Powerbook G4 and a Reliance ZTE Corp MC315 PCMCIA Type II Data Card. But I am unable to use the data card on my powerbook. My Powerbook recognises that a PCMCIA card is getting inserted. But how do I configure the card to connect to the internet? Any specific driver that I need to download? Any help/suggestion on this would be great.

    Thanks,

    Rudra

Please give me the Modem script urgently at rounak2@gmail.com

  9. Hi Guys!
Really nice to see a forum with Mac users for us in India, lots of help and advice I can see.
I wanted to know what is the best mobile net option for a new intel macbook, whether the reliance USB? or Tata Indicom USB? which is better, and since these are newer, are they also better than the mobile phone and data cable options?

Thanks in advance to any help offered.

  15. Hi guys,

I have a macbook pro and a verizon v640 data card already for it (works in the US)

    1. Do I need to buy another data card/cable from Reliance when I get to India or can I just hack my verizon CDMA card somehow?

    2. Do I need to get the phone or can I just buy the data card?

    3. Is this something I should book in the US or just do it when I get to India?

    Thanks!!

  16. Ariel:

    1. I don’t think your Verizon CDMA card will work here. You would most probably need to get a new one. Unlocking a phone SIM to work in India is possible, but I have seen it only on GSM chips. Not sure about CDMA.

    2. I think it may be better if you take a phone plus data cable. Then you can use it for voice and data both.

    3. You can do it once you are in India. Or you can ask your relative / host in India to arrange for it before you arrive, so that you can use it quickly. The activation process can take a couple of days once you buy it.

  17. Alternatively, I can just install the solution on my Windows XP side via Parallels. In that case and I am able to connect, can I just move to the Mac side and will it keep the data connection?

  18. i have gone through all the posts at this forum i am a mac book pro user from last one year. Till now I was using internet through Nokia’s N70 using it’s bluetooth facility. Recently I purchased the ZTE MG 880 from reliance and was unable to configure it on my mac but using paralle’s desktop i am able to configure and use this USB modem on my mac book pro. Through which I am getting a very good download speed also. With the netbooster facility provided by reliance I am very happy with the surfing speed. It is very fast compared to all the earlier wireless modems. I have used PCMCI card ZTE on my Sony Vaio for a long period but I was not happy with the speed. But this ZTE MG 880 is giving me fantastic speed. Right now I am trying to create the small private network in win mode of parrallel which will help me to connect net in OS X mode also I will keep you all informed about my progress. Thank you….. Meanwhile if anybody gets the direct drivers for MG 880 please let me know also such that I also can save my procedure to get connected in OS X mode…….

  19. Hi As I have mentioned earlier on this forum with the help of parrellels I have configured my mac book pro to work on Reliance’s USB modem ZTE MG 880. With this I can use internet in both the environments ie in windows XP as well as MAC OS X. I am getting very good speed in both the environments.
