in Ideas Worth Sharing

The Monk who sold his Ferrari

I have become a Robin Sharma fan after reading this book. The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari is the book that made the biggest impact in my life so far. I recommend the book to everyone. Here are some of the key ideas I captured.

  • Forget about the past. Dare to dream that you are more than the sum of your circumstances. Expect the best.
  • Condition the mind. Don’t let negative thoughts enter it.
  • You are building your destiny because only you decide how do you react to what happens to you.
  • Persistence is the mother of personal change.
  • With one eye fixed on the destination, there is only one left to guide you along the journey.
  • Reflect on your day, on your life.
  • What you visualize, you get.
  • There is nothing noble in being superior to some other person. True nobility lies in being superior to your former self. Run your own race.
  • Never judge you self worth by somebody else’s net worth.
  • There are no setbacks – only lessons.
  • The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your thoughts.
  • Find out what you truly love to do, and direct all energy towards it
  • The purpose of life is a life of purpose
  • Clearly defined priorities and goals for every aspect of life server as lighthouse. Offering you guidance and refuge.
  • Have the discipline and vision to see your heroic mission – Dharma – and to ensure that it servers other people while you realize it.
  • Never do anything because you have to, do it only if you want to and if that is the right thing for you to do
  • 5 step method of attaining goals – form a clear mental picture, create positive pressure, set a deadline, put it to paper, apply it for 21 days
  • The book of dreams
  • Kaizen – constant and never ending enrichment of mind, body and soul
  • The only limits on your life are the ones you set yourself
  • Happiness comes from progressive realization of worthy objectives
  • Failure is your friend
  • Do the things you fear
  • 10 rules of radiant living: Ritual of solitude, Ritual of physicality, Ritual of live nourishments, Ritual of abundant knowledge, Ritual of personal reflection, Ritual of early awakening, Ritual of music, Ritual of spoken word, Ritual of congruent character, Ritual of simplicity
  • Virtues – industry, compassion, humility, patience, honesty and courage
  • I am more than I appear to be, all the world’s power and strength rests within me
  • Live with discipline
  • Enlightened people are priority driven. This is the secret of time mastery. Focus on priorities and maintain balance.
  • Act as if failure is impossible and your success will be assured
  • We are not human beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a human experience
  • The quality of your life will come down to the quality of your contribution
  • See yourself not as an individual, but as a part of collection
  • Life does not always give you what you want, but it always gives you what you need
  • Stop putting off your happiness for the sake of achievement

  1. Motivation lies in every word, every sound & every incident which happens in our life. What matters – are we open to receive motivation? Have we prepared ourselves to get charged for the better? Will is what will allow you to absorb all those good words which lead you to happiness & success.
Well said. Thanks for summarizing the key ideas.

  2. A friend of mine has been raving about this book which spurred me to google this Sharma guy. Well guess I’ll give him a try and hope it’s worth it.

  3. Robin Sharma is good! I like his style of story telling. The wisdom he shares is age old. But he puts it together really well with a context of today’s world!

  4. Robin Sharma is master of motivation. He didnt tell any thing new, but the way he explained the life, its goal, and the methods to live life as we should.

I’m really inspired by the book!!

  5. How do you prevent the negative thoughts from entering your mind?.. the more u try to supress them, the more it pops up.

  6. I agree it’s difficult to supress negative thoughts. So don’t supress them. Start asking yourself what’s positive about the situation! Or what is it that can be created out of the situation!

  7. very good book i used to practice the excersises wich helped alot in pretty much everything…worth reading…worth buying…

  8. this is truly an amazing book. robin sharma in fact has nothing new in his philosophy, but the way he expresses it , is truly motivating. i recently finished reading his latest book, the greatness guide- in which his approach to life seems slightly changed. there’s an emphasis on enjoying the journey while working toward your goals. something i should really learn as i label myself “serious” … one must enjoy life else , one turns into a total workaholic. v. v important!

  9. Wow ! this really gives motivation for all to survive their best in their life.Me too alwayz had a negative thinking of wat i am doing.but upon reading this i changed my kind of thought and i’m trying to think always positive and be positive. This really provides a clear road for success..
    Thanks for posting….

  10. As I stood in a small gift shop nestled withinin a slice of paridise near Cozumel, a book with a peculiar name was brought to my attention (Ferrari is an inside joke my friends tease me about). I picked the book up and quickly glanced at it, but then something drew me to open it. As I started to read an excerpt, I realized it was about a trial lawyer (you see, I am a trial lawyer and thoughts of an early grave due to the frantic pace of my profession have danced through my mind in the last few months…hence, being in Mexico trying to relax). I put the book back on the shelf and went off to play…but the book kept haunting the back of my mind, so I purchased it and haven’t stopped reading and thinking about it since.

Simply put, this book is amazing. It’s true that Sharma isn’t telling us anything new; however, the way he tells it is both inspirational and easy to understand.

As with Vishal Takyar, this book too came at the right time when I was open to its lessons, which is another point in the book…when the student is ready the teacher will come.

    Peace to you all!

  11. in the library i was browsing through the shelves and this book caught my eye and iwas just glancing . suddenly some out of the blue -a stranger of course- came near me and urged me to buy this book. just started reading. just great! thanks to stranger.

A truely wonderful book, makes me feel calm and focused everytime i read part of it.
Everyone should read this book and see what a difference it makes to their way of thinking. =)

  16. Hi,
I happened to get this book:leadership wisdom from TMWSHF.Believe me,I am not a good reader but after I read it,I just was not able to wait for this book-TMWSHF.Amazing book!!!The rituals are nicely expressed by Robin Sharma. The 8 rituals are explained clearly considering the locations by Julian, which makes it more lively.I would really say that these kind of books may inspire many.

    Cheers.

  17. Very nice book. I have read so many motivation books but when it comes to implementation, i could not. Found this book in a very practical approach.

    Started implementing now..
    Thanks to Robin Sharma.

  18. I’m going to go against the grain here, I didn’t like the book, it has some good ideals but they’re not original and while the way he communicates those ideas are it got boring simply because they’re not new ideas.

  19. a cherished friend from India gave me this book. i just finished reading it. some of the principles written by the author arent so new, but the way he presented it captivated me & i cudnt put down the book the minute i started reading it…some of the tales almost made me cry, a few made me laugh, most thoughts challenged me…i guess this book will definitely help me see my world a better place to live in. “I am more than I appear to be, all the world’s power and strength rests within me”. U know that there are more neurons in our brain that you can count all the stars in the sky? u mr sharma is definitely knows what he’s talking about.

  20. Hi Nirav ,

Really good book and very practical . I agree that the author has not said anything new but packaged it very nicely so that all of us can immensely benefit.

BTW : Saw some reviews on “Give me back my guitar” written by Potharaju Ravindra , and Published by Macmillan . Have you read it ?

  21. Thanks for the comments Sushil. I haven’t read the book you mention. But looking at its website, it looks like a good little read!

  22. Nothing great in his book. All these already there in the Indian Vedas 10k years back. All these people including Deepak Chopra are making fortunes by selling vedic concepts. If they are so concerned for humanity why don’t they donate their fortunes to the needy and poor street kids in India ? Success is not measured by sharing stage with Bill Clinton.

  23. Ranjit, You are right. All these are in Vedas. The author has also mentioned this. But how many of us would have studied Vedas in this time…..Why should they spend there fortune for poor. They haven’t said that “Sell all your things and donate to poor and become a monk.” The book is about attaining inner peace and harmony with old mythical ways of Indian Vedic cult…..I think you haven’t read the book at all. Or you are in pure agony or dejection.

  24. This is a good book. The true results will unfold if you take it one step beyond reading which is implementation. I will try to practice some of the exercises mentioned, starting with controlling your mind and replacing negative thoughts with positive thoughts. Clear your life of the past grudges and practice forgiveness.

May you all experience true bliss.

  25. Wonderful book….truly inspiring!
I loved reading it, I felt something new in every sentence. I learnt few things which I never thought of.

As Julian Mantle explained that “95% of people always think what they have thought of earlier, we think what we thought earlier, repeatedly. We have to expand our thoughts and think differently”

  26. its a masterpiece book. It has changed my life in away that i can’t possible image.

i thank the person who introduced that book, i really need by buy my copy cos i was reading my friend’s copy. i have’nt finished reading it and i would like to read it as many times i would like to read it. i learned to forgive myself for the things i did in the past. i always blamed my past for not making it in life but i would like to practice those excercise that were mentioned in the book. Julian Mantle.

where do i buy it. i Live in Lesotho Southern Africa

I thank you very much Sharma.

  27. Well summarised. I have read the book. Now I have its essence I can print and pin to my softboard. Maybe improve on one of these virtues at a time.
    Fine work, Nirav

  28. Ryan I see no one responded to you. I agree it’s not new, but how much of anything fave you actually put in practise?

  29. Hi
